A bit of history
The foundation of Orange
Around 36 BC, Orange (Arausio in Latin) was founded by the veterans of the 2nd Gallic legion of Caesar.
The construction of the Theatre
The theatre was one of the first great public buildings built under the reign of Augustus in Narbonese Gaul.
The decadence of the Theatre
When Christianity became the official religion, Pagan pleasures were banned. Closed, pillaged, burnt, the theatre was ravished in every way possible.
Middle Ages and Renaissance
Used as a defensive outpost in the Middle Ages, in the 16th century it became a refuge for local residents during the wars of religion and was overrun by housing.
The days of restoration
The theatre regained its original function in the 19th century. Prosper Mérimée, inspector of Monuments Historiques, began a huge renovation programme.
