Ancient theater

In the heart of the Rhône Valley, the Théâtre Antique d’Orange is certainly one of the finest legacies of Imperial Rome. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is the best-preserved theater in Europe.

It owes its fame above all to its magnificent stage wall, amazingly well preserved and unique in the Western world. A major performance venue in Roman times, it remains so today to the delight of music lovers the world over.

Museum of Art and History

The Musée d’art et d’histoire d’Orange is housed in a mansion built in the 17th century by Georges Van Cuyl. This Dutchman was in charge of munitions for the castle of the Princes of Orange, which stood atop the Saint-Eutrope hill above the theater.

From its origins, the hotel has retained its staircase, windows, French ceilings and gypsum fireplace. Today, it houses a rich collection of furniture and objets d’art, and traces the history of Orange from Antiquity to the 19th century.

Arc de triomphe

Another testimony to Roman grandeur in Orange, the Arc de Triomphe is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is in fact a commemorative urban arch serving as a gateway to the city. Erected in tribute to the veterans of Caesar’s 2nd Gallic Legion who founded the town, it is an exceptional monument to Provençal Roman art. Comprising a monumental three-bay doorway and a double attic, it is richly decorated with panels of weapons: shields, helmets, ensigns…
